At the forefront of a brave new kind of artmaking.
Part VR experience, part audio streetwalk, part escape room - The Door in Question is a groundbreaking 90-minute immersive theatre experience, spanning 2 venues and combining mixed reality, interactive AI, and live performance to create an immersive journey into psychosis. The intimate solo experience takes participants through abandoned spaces in Footscray. Disorienting voices guide you through gritty urban landscapes, decrepit domestic environments, and a world based on classical mythology – statues of Medusa, fountains, ancient Greek columns.
As the technical producer on the project, my role was to integrate an eclectic mix of technologies - stage lighting, multi-channel audio, electronics, and custom-built interactive props, as well as develop a method to tie the audience's journey from VR experience, through to an audio streetwalk, and finally to a self-directed escape room journey in an entirely separate venue.
The door in question used a wild mix of technologies to create empathy and understanding around mental health while pushing the boundaries of what extended reality (XR) can achieve in live performance. The work transformed abandoned urban spaces into powerful theatrical venues, and received highly regarded reviews in the Age and the Guardian.
